Every year on August 15 we celebrate our country's Independence Day which marks the day we became an independent nation. This means we were free to rule ourselves and no one else could rule us. The day marks the 200th anniversary of the freedom of our beloved country from the long, hard rule of the British. It was a long and bloody struggle, for which many brave freedom fighters and great men sacrificed their lives.

Drills are conducted in every corner of the country and Indians dress in a specific manner in order to celebrate their nation and culture. The day is celebrated with great pomp and show in Delhi, the national capital. Both leaders and common people gather in large numbers to greet the Prime Minister, who will be arriving in the area in front of the Red Fort. Hoisting the national flag, the Prime Minister gives a speech highlighting the government's accomplishments of the past year, pointing out the issues that still need to be addressed, and calling for further development.
